School meets practice - a day of lessons in our community

On 12.04.2024, we took part in a school trip that included a visit to the fairy caves in Saalfeld. The event began at the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district administration office, where we were first given a guided tour of the historic building. We learnt interesting facts about the history and tasks of the district office. The Chapel of the Holy Trinity, which is located in the building, was particularly impressive with its ornate frescoes and decorations. From the castle tower, we were able to see the city from above in perfect weather.

After visiting the district administration office, we made our way to the Prinzessinnengarten. We enjoyed our breakfast in bright sunshine and had a good time. Refreshed, we then made our way to the fairy grottoes, which were just a few minutes' drive away.

Our group guide was already waiting for us there and led us through the caves with great enthusiasm and expertise. We learnt interesting details about the formation of the caves, the minerals and rock formations that can be found there, as well as the legends and stories that surround the fairy caves. The story of the "arm candlestick" was particularly exciting. In the past, this was the name given to the youngest miners underground, who had the important task of holding the burning pieces of wood for lighting and thus slowly learning the ropes.
